Installing Remote Agents to network machines

In this document, we will look into remote installation of the agents that are installed with the Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 server installation. This document will install the “Remote Agent for Window” and “Advanced Open file option” to the domain controller using the IP address.

Select the “Windows Remote Agents” under the remote computers and click on “Add” to add computers where we will install the agents.

Next, provide the name or IP address of the computer where we install the agents and provide the domain name, in this case we provided the IP of the domain controller

Select the agents that you need to install, in this case we selected the “Remote Agent for Windows” {selected by default} and “Advanced Open File Option” and click Finish.

Next, we select the Symantec Backup Exec media server where the publish information is stored. In our case the only server that will be displayed is the server where we installed the Symantec Backup Exec Server.

We can review our remote installation options in this screen, if we need any modifications to the list of computers or selection of add-on options we can perform this action at this stage.

Click on Install to start the installation

The install begins and will provide the updates on the installation. If any issues are faced during the remote installation the % complete will not be 100%, in such cases we need to look into the reasons and start the installation all over again.

This way we install the remote agents, you can run the similar process to install the remote agent for desktops and laptops to install the agent on the client machines on the network.

Installalling Symantec Backup Exec 12.5

This installation report will provide the details of the installation of the Symantec Backup Exec 12.5. Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 was installed on a dedicated server for all backup and restore related activities in the company. This report takes a step by step walkthrough on the installation of Symantec Backup Exec 12.5

The first step in the installation process is the Environment check to ensure all the dependencies of the installation are in place. We have used the “SymanAdmin” enterprise admin account for the installation.

The Environment check process is run and the check is successfully completed having all the required dependencies in place.

As we are installing the Backup Exec 12.5 on the local server (dedicated server for Backup Exec) we selected the “Local Install” option. This server will be the primary and the only media server on the network which will support the functions of the Symantec Backup Exec 12.5

The next step is to load all the purchased licenses that include the add-on options that have been purchased along with the Backup Exec 12.5 Server. The add-ons include
1.       Active Directory Agent
2.       Agent for Microsoft Exchange
3.       Agent for Microsoft SQL Server
4.       Central Admin option
5.       Desktop and Laptop option
6.       SAN Shared storage option

This confirms the options that are selected with the license keys that have been provided in the previous stage of the installation.

The enterprise admin accounts “SymanAdmin” was used as the service account that will be used during execution of the backup jobs that will have access to all the content on the network for a successful backup, if the account credentials of this account are changed then we need to ensure that the account settings are updated to ensure the backup jobs do have the required access to the content on the network, else the jobs may fail.

As the server does not have any SQL Instance, SQL Express instance is installed to host all the database requirements of the Backup Exec software.  It is not advised to access the database that’s required by Symantec hence the SQL Management Studio was not installed with this installation to keep the instance running in the back ground and provide the required support to the Backup Exec Server.

The default and recommended Tape Device drivers option is selected which will be a good drivers choice for the installed Tape devices.

A summary of the installation is provided and on the click the installation starts that included the installation of the SQL Express Edition.

The final step in the installation is the success page of the wizard ensuring a smooth installation that met all the requirements for an efficient Backup solution of the files and folders on the network.
